Imagery on the Coins of Dor

Tetradrachm This research project analyzes the Greek and Roman coins minted at Dora in order to reconstruct various aspects of the society of the ancient city, including coin use and exchange, religious and economic life, and the architecture of the monuments represented on the coins. By focusing on the semiotic function of coins as primary vehicles of cultural self-understanding, we argue that the Dora coins offer valuable insights into the evolution and outlook of a culture that formed as an aggregate of systems.

A paper titled: Coins and Cultural Identity at Tel Dor was presented by Rosa Maria Motta on the Seventh International Symposium, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia - Sep 2009.
